Why We Clean Computer Mouse & Keyboard

Cleaning your computer mouse and keyboard is essential for several reasons:

1. Hygiene and Health
  • Bacteria and Germs: Keyboards and mice can harbor bacteria, viruses, and other germs due to frequent hand contact. Regular cleaning helps minimize the risk of transferring these microorganisms to your hands and face, reducing the likelihood of illness.
  • Allergens: Dust, pollen, and other allergens can accumulate on these devices, potentially triggering allergies or respiratory issues.
2. Performance
  • Sticky Keys and Buttons**: Debris can get lodged under keys and buttons, leading to sticking or unresponsive keys. Cleaning helps maintain smooth operation and responsiveness.
  • Sensor Accuracy: For optical or laser mice, dirt or smudges on the sensor can affect tracking accuracy, impacting your ability to use the mouse effectively.
3. Longevity and Maintenance
  • Preventing Wear and Tear: Regular cleaning can help prevent the build-up of grime that might lead to mechanical issues or wear out the components more quickly.
  • Maintaining Aesthetic Appeal**: Keeping your keyboard and mouse clean helps maintain their appearance, preventing them from looking worn out or grimy.
4. Comfort
  • Smooth Operation**: Dirt and grime can create friction, making it uncomfortable to use the keyboard or mouse. Cleaning ensures a more pleasant and smooth user experience.
How to Clean Them

Keyboard
  1. Turn Off and Unplug: For wired keyboards, unplug them. For wireless keyboards, turn them off if possible.
  2. Shake and Tap: Gently shake the keyboard and tap it upside down to dislodge loose debris.
  3. Compressed Air: Use a can of compressed air to blow out dust and crumbs from between the keys.
  4. Wipe Down: Use a slightly damp microfiber cloth or disinfecting wipes to clean the surface of the keys. Avoid getting moisture under the keys.
  5. Deep Cleaning (Optional): For a thorough clean, you can carefully remove the keycaps (if your keyboard design allows) and clean both the keys and the surface underneath. Just ensure you note the placement of the keycaps for reassembly.
Mouse
  1. Turn Off and Unplug: For wired mice, unplug them. For wireless mice, turn them off if possible.
  2. Wipe the Surface: Use a damp cloth or disinfecting wipe to clean the top surface of the mouse. Avoid getting moisture into any openings.
  3. Clean the Sensor: Gently clean the optical or laser sensor on the bottom of the mouse with a dry, soft brush or a microfiber cloth to remove any dust or smudges.
  4. Remove Debris: Use a small brush or a toothpick to carefully remove any debris from the crevices around the buttons and scroll wheel.
Regular cleaning will help ensure that your keyboard and mouse continue to function effectively and remain in good condition.
